FOREIGN RELATIONS

After the War of 1812, many treaties were established. One of them included the Rush-Bagot Treaty, which was signed between the US Secretary Charles Bagot and British Minister Richard Rush, and it limited ships on the Great Lake and agreed not to build more war ships. One problem the US faced was that the Seminole Indians and Georgian residents were fighting in Spanish Florida, and the Spanish were too busy to control them. Jackson was sent to Spanish Florida to deal with the Seminole Indians, but against his orders, he fought the First Seminole War by marching into Florida and capturing the Pensacola and St. Marks. Following this, John Quincy Adams talked to Do Luis de Onis and got Spain to agree to the Adam-Onis Treaty. It gave the US Spanish Florida, allowed Spain to renounce its claim to the Oregon Territory, and the US gave up its claim to a portion of the Texas territory it received during the Louisiana Purchase. Lastly, a big agreement was the Monroe Doctrine. After the US and Britain agreed that Europe's involvement in the Western Hemisphere would mess up trade after Spain tried to create a democracy, which disrupted European peace, John Quincy Adams wrote a speech for James Monroe that stated that Europe would not get involved in the Western Hemisphere. America was no longer open to European colonization and Europe could not create any new colonies, and independent nations in Latin American would be left alone.

  2. Source 1: Foreign relations had to do with treaties. In this photo, it shows America coming together with Europe. John Quincy Adams wrote a speech for James Madison. In this speech it had an agreement that Europe would not be allowed to be in the Western Hemisphere. Europe also could not start any new colonies. In exchange, America could not be involved in European colonization.

  3. Source 2: The War of 1812 had been caused by having issues with other countries, such as Great Britain and France not respecting the neutrality of the seas and taking American ships and their sailors, even some who were America. Being a newborn country, it is extremely difficult being accepted by other strong nations. As seen in the picture America is battling with Great Britain. Great Britain and France not respecting the neutrality of the seas and taking American ships and their sailors, even some who were America.

  4. Source 3: After the war of 1812 America solidified its place as an independent, strong nation, that could stand up against foreign nations. Not only did Americans finally believe that but so did foreign nations. This image shows how America has become equal to the other powerful nations such as Britain. The equal sizes of the British and American flag next to each other illustrates that.

  5. Source 4: After the War of 1812, the different states had conflicting views on many different things, such as the government and slavery. The South wanted more peace and not war, and they wished to keep slavery to help with their crops since crops were their main export and way to make money. The North felt slavery was not right anymore and many expressed their dislike of it and wanted it to be abolished. The North had a more factory based economy since during the War of 1812 they had to start making their own goods since they could not import them from Britain anymore.

  6. Source 5: When dealing with foreign relations or affairs it can be tricky because it deals with the relationships between nations. A proclamation was issued in 1793 declaring neutrality. Washington would not chose a side of France or Great Britain because siding with one would cause war with the other. However this foreign relation was not exactly a good one due to France and Great Britain terrorizing american ships and provoking them to break the proclamation.
